The White House has provided a one-month exemption from tariffs for major automakers Stellantis, Ford, and General Motors following their appeal to President Donald Trump. While this reprieve aims to level the playing field, it comes with caveats: automakers will face new tariffs on steel and aluminum, effective soon. The pause reflects ongoing trade discussions related to the USMCA agreement and the White House's stance regarding fentanyl trafficking, which impacts tariffs with Canada and Mexico, a point of contention among trade leaders.
"At the request of the companies associated with USMCA, the president is giving them an exemption for one month so they are not at an economic disadvantage," White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters.
"It isn't all good news for Detroit. Automakers won't get another pause when Trump's second round of trade-related tariffs goes into effect on April 2."
"Trump said he told Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Wednesday that his country still had more work to do."
