Tesla plans to launch its unsupervised robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, this June, with Elon Musk stating safety is the top priority. Customers have driven over 3 billion miles using the company's Full Self-Driving feature, which is not fully autonomous yet. Currently, Tesla vehicles have been seen operating without human intervention on private roads. Unlike many competitors, Tesla relies solely on cameras for its vehicle perception system, excluding lidar. This launch follows discussions with Austin's autonomous vehicle task force.
"We just want to put a toe in the water, make sure everything's okay, put a few more toes in the water, with safety of the general public and those in the car as a top priority," Musk said.
Tesla's customers have cumulatively driven over 3 billion miles on Full Self-Driving (Supervised) as of January, emphasizing this as a precursor to fully autonomous vehicles.
