GM's transition to electrification has led to the launch of 17 fully electrified vehicles, positioning the company in second place in the U.S. EV market after Tesla. Much of this shift is attributed to strategies learned from Tesla. Jon McNeil, a GM board member and former Tesla president, highlighted how Elon Musk's management style, including real product evaluations and focus on product perfection derived from insights of Steve Jobs, significantly influenced product development. The goal of Tesla's approach was to create products that evoke surprise and delight among customers.
"No slides was our first rule. You have to be reviewing real product." McNeil emphasizes the importance of tangible product assessments in effective management.
"If you want to be successful in business, you have to have a perfect product. And if the product is beautiful, it will sell itself." This advice from Steve Jobs underlines the significance of product quality.
"The thing we were looking for first of all was surprise and delight. Like, are we doing something that is going to just make somebody go wow or laugh or have fun?" This philosophy drove Tesla's product development.
