In Ventura, California, a Tesla Cybertruck sank in the harbor after its driver mistakenly accelerated in reverse. Fortunately, the driver escaped safely, but the incident prompted a response from multiple agencies, including the Coast Guard due to safety concerns about submerged lithium-ion batteries. Captain Shevitz noted that this incident is not isolated; three similar occurrences have been reported in the past year, raising awareness about the potential risks associated with these vehicles in water-related accidents.
"The operator indicated he thought he was in forward, and he was actually in reverse," Shevitz told SFGATE. "He accelerated to go up the ramp and went backwards."
"Lithium-ion batteries do not do well going underwater," Shevitz said.
This incident marks one of three similar cases within the last year involving the Cybertruck and its drivers getting into trouble.
Various agencies including the Coast Guard and Tesla engineers were on alert for potential dangers from the truck's submerged batteries.
