The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) reported a decline in new car sales, with August registering 84,575 cars compared to 85,657 in the previous year.
SMMT chief executive Mike Hawes emphasized that while August's EV growth is encouraging, it is influenced by seasonal factors and highlighted the need for urgent action to address affordability and charging concerns.
Ian Plummer from Auto Trader noted that UK registrations were slow in August as buyers typically wait for the new plate change in September, but electric vehicle interest is rising due to discounting.
Plummer also stressed that the UK government must continue supporting new EV buyers through financial incentives and reducing VAT on public charging to facilitate the transition to electric vehicles.
