Honda Still Might Have Saved Nissan
Briefly

The proposed merger between Honda and Nissan has been called off, as Honda realized that merging with a troubled Nissan would be unwise. This decision serves as a wake-up call for Nissan, leading to its CEO Makoto Uchida acknowledging the need for substantial internal changes. Analysts have noted Nissan's slow restructuring efforts as a critical issue, prompting Uchida to push for reforms including leadership cuts and factory closures. Honda's CEO Toshihiro Mibe highlighted the importance of speed in addressing industry challenges, ultimately suggesting that Nissan focus on fixing its own problems instead of relying on a merger.
Nissan's overall restructuring plan was being executed slowly. And negotiating with Honda made them realize that.
The far greater concern would be that the integration could progress so slowly that we would fall into a more serious situation in the future. Speed is quite important these days.
Let Honda be in charge, and make Nissan its subsidiary. Essentially, Mibe was saying "I can fix you," and Nissan decided it's better off fixing itself.
