GM's Cruise Cars Are Back on the Road in Three US States-But Not for Ride-Hailing
Briefly

GM is repurposing retired Cruise Bolt electric hatchbacks for internal testing of new driver-assistance technologies. These vehicles are currently being tested on select highways in Michigan, Texas, and the Bay Area with human drivers behind the wheel. The testing involves equipment like lidar sensors and aims to further develop simulation models. After taking full control of Cruise in February 2023, GM has removed Cruise branding from the vehicles while reviving a portion of a previously halted robotaxi business due to safety concerns after an incident involving a pedestrian.
GM is using a limited number of Cruise Bolt vehicles on select highways in Michigan, Texas, and the Bay Area for testing with trained drivers to further develop simulation models and advanced driver assistance systems.
Initially, GM acquired a majority stake in Cruise in 2016, investing over $8 billion into a robotaxi service that aimed for rapid expansion before its recent shut down.
