General Motors Knows Its EV Party Won't Last
""There's no doubt we'll see lower EV sales next quarter after tax credits end September 30," one executive said."
""We're expecting strong demand once again in September. The question, of course, is what's next?""
GM sold over 21,000 electric vehicles in the U.S. in August, a monthly record that surpassed July's 19,000 and pushed 2025 year-to-date EV sales to more than 118,000, exceeding 2024's total of about 114,000. Strong consumer demand has been driven by a wave of new battery models, including the Cadillac Escalade IQ, Chevrolet Equinox EV, Cadillac Optiq, Chevy Blazer EV SS and Cadillac Lyriq-V. The surge in August and July also reflects rush buying ahead of the federal EV tax credit cutoff on September 30, producing short-term FOMO-driven demand. GM expects strong September demand but anticipates lower sales once credits expire.
