On Saturday morning in Ojai, residents were temporarily ordered to evacuate or shelter in place due to a fire from a Volvo XC90 hybrid electric vehicle. Firefighters found the vehicle's battery in thermal runaway, a situation that leads to uncontrollable temperatures. Rather than extinguish the flames, they focused on protecting the surrounding area while the fire burned out. As the situation stabilized and smoke dissipated by afternoon, warnings were downgraded. The scene remained active, with drones monitoring residual heat until it was safe to tow the vehicle away.
Rather than try to extinguish the fire, they positioned equipment to protect the surrounding neighborhood to monitor it while it burned itself out.
At that point, the batteries will continue to burn and burn despite putting water on them. Our current and most effective firefighting strategy is to protect health and safety of responders and citizens.
