I Know What It Takes to Get a Job in This Market. My Friend Doesn't Want to Hear It.
"I was unemployed for a year until six months ago. It was one of the hardest times in my life. I put in hundreds of applications, had interviews with several companies-and then nothing. I had run through all my savings and was truly about to give up on my field completely when a former colleague reached out with an opportunity to work with him."
"But my question is about my friend "Annalise." We work in the same field, and she was laid off a month ago. I don't think she is taking it seriously enough. She's could always get new jobs within a few months before, and she thinks that will happen now. Well, I could too, until I couldn't. I have tried to tell her it's really different out there now. She told me she's a hustler and will figure it out."
The job seeker was unemployed for a year before taking a much lower-paying position found through a former colleague. The seeker feels immensely grateful for the job but remains anxious about job security and fears losing it. A friend, Annalise, was laid off a month ago and assumes she will quickly find new work, believing she can 'hustle' her way back into employment. The seeker is offended by this attitude because it implies that the prior year of unemployment was the seeker's fault and overlooks the extensive, personalized efforts undertaken. The seeker values relationship-building and worries the friend underestimates the current job market.
