Toronto prioritizes sidewalk snow clearance, begins local street removal | CBC News
"Sidewalk plowing has become the number one city service request after the snowstorm, said city manager Paul Johnson at a news conference Wednesday. He admitted the city was not doing enough and vowed to do better. Last night we started to send more crews out to do sidewalks, he said, adding more inspectors will head out to ensure work is being done properly and to identify other areas of concern."
"Removal started Tuesday evening around hospitals and will now move to highways, bridges and narrow local roads, said Mayor Olivia Chow, as heavy machinery rumbled behind her moving large piles of snow. Orange signs will start to be posted on residential roads 24 hours before city crews come through for snow clearance, she said. Chow asked residents to support each other to move cars and help crews get through."
"That sign is not a notice for permit holders on streets that they'll be fined or towed away, but a request to move your car so city crews don't have to, said Johnson. He said snowplows will clear one side of the street at a time. The faster we can get down your street, the faster we can get on to the next street, said Johnson."
Sidewalk plowing became the number one city service request following the winter storm. City officials acknowledged the response was insufficient and committed to improving sidewalk clearance within the next 24-hour cycle. More crews were sent last night to clear sidewalks, and additional inspectors will monitor work and identify problem areas. Snow removal began Tuesday evening around hospitals and will move next to highways, bridges, and narrow local roads. Orange signs will be posted on residential roads 24 hours before crews arrive as a request for residents to move cars and aid crews. Snowplows will clear one side of the street at a time, and sidewalk work is mostly assigned to contractors.
