"That funding is now gone as of today,"
"It felt like a make-work project. Install the cameras. Okay, a few years later, get rid of the cameras. Hire the staff, fire the staff. A thousand people may lose their jobs."
"ensure these vital safety programs are not discontinued."
Ontario's effective ban on municipal speed cameras eliminates revenue from Toronto's automated speed enforcement program. The lost revenue previously covered costs for 911 crossing guards ($31.2 million) and 18 traffic safety police officers ($3.9 million). The city collected $30,375,060 in fines from Jan. 1 to Aug. 31, 2025, from 150 speed cameras (126 mobile, 24 permanent). The mayor said the funding is gone and indicated the city will have to lay off about 100 workers who operated the program and warned that a thousand people may lose jobs. City council unanimously urged the province to reimburse operating costs. The provincial government announced a $210-million Road Safety Initiatives Fund.
