The Federal Court of Appeal ruled that major streaming companies like Netflix and Disney Plus won't have to pay into Canadian content funds until their appeal is heard.
In June, the CRTC mandated foreign streamers contribute five percent of their Canadian revenues to fund local content, a decision now under legal challenge.
The appeals are centered on a decision made under the Online Streaming Act, which the companies argue will impose undue financial burdens.
Despite the funding obligation potentially totaling millions per company, the Federal Court has expedited the hearing schedule to resolve the issue quickly.
