Colin Bykowski represents a growing trend among Canadians, as Statistics Canada reported a 23% decline in car trips to the U.S. in February. This shift is largely influenced by economic factors and geopolitical concerns, particularly President Trump's tariffs. Travel agencies have noted a significant drop in leisure bookings to the U.S., indicating that while Canadians continue to travel, they are now opting for destinations outside North America. This change reflects a broader caution and re-evaluation of travel preferences among Canadians.
"With what's going on, we're being a little bit more conscious with our buying decisions, and we'll see going forward," said Bykowski.
Data released by Statistics Canada on Monday shows that the number of return trips among Canadians travelling by car to the U.S. declined significantly in February, down 23 per cent compared with a year earlier.
One Canadian travel agency reported that leisure bookings to the U.S. plummeted 40 per cent compared with the same month last year.
Canadians had not stopped travelling completely but rather were looking to travel to locations outside the U.S."
