Jesse Van Rootselaar killed nine people, including his 39-year-old mother, an 11-year-old stepbrother, a 39-year-old female teacher, three 12-year-old female students, and two male students aged 12 and 13, then died by suicide. The death toll was revised down to nine, including Van Rootselaar, from an initial report of ten. Van Rootselaar had been apprehended on more than one occasion under the provincial Mental Health Act for assessment. Police had attended the family residence multiple times over several years dealing with concerns of mental health. Tumbler Ridge is a remote British Columbia community of about 2,400 people.
