Ontario considering counting student residences toward aim of building 1.5 million homes | CBC News
Briefly

Ontario's minister of municipal affairs and housing is contemplating including student residences and retirement homes in the province's ambitious target of constructing 1.5 million homes within a decade. Paul Calandra conveyed this intent in a recent correspondence to a municipal official in Mississauga, highlighting an expansion in the scope of housing types being considered.
While the Ontario government's spring budget indicates an acceleration in housing starts, estimated at 80,000 for 2024, this momentum remains insufficient to achieve the 1.5 million homes objective by 2031. The province's efforts to meet annual housing construction targets are facing obstacles despite measures like counting long-term care beds as residences.
Acknowledging the importance of ramping up housing construction, Ontario aimed at 125,000 homes for the current year, with a future target of 175,000 homes annually. Although the government claimed to have reached 99% of the previous year's goal by counting long-term care beds, significant progress is still required to meet the overall housing objective.
