In a recent announcement, Ontario's Progressive Conservative Leader Doug Ford pledges to abolish tolls on Highway 407 and permanently reduce gas and diesel taxes if he secures re-election. Speaking in Pickering, he emphasized the importance of allowing families to retain more of their earnings amidst ongoing financial pressures. His measures, including a potential buyback of the privately-owned section of the highway, aim to alleviate commuter costs and counter inflationary challenges. He expressed concerns regarding U.S. tariffs under Donald Trump, asserting the need for proactive cost-saving strategies.
"You deserve to keep more of what you earn every single day," Ford said. Removing tolls will save daily commuters $7,200 every year, the PC Party said in a news release Thursday.
"The simple truth is, as long as Donald Trump is president, the risk of tariffs will never go away... Families' budgets are already overstretched because of inflation, interest rates and the carbon tax," he said.
Ford said cost saving measures are needed in the wake of U.S. President Donald Trump's threat to hit virtually all Canadian goods with 25 percent tariffs.
Although those tariffs have been paused for a month, "none of us can breathe easy," Ford said.
