Nature Conservancy Canada (NCC) announced the protection of a one-kilometre section of shoreline at the Bruce Peninsula, funded by federal and provincial governments. This new nature reserve, located in China Cove, safeguards 29 hectares of important ecosystems and provides public access. The area, previously eyed for cottage development, hosts threatened species like the midland painted turtle. An Indigenous name, Aah Mahwi Nibi, meaning Crying Water, was chosen to honor local history, reflecting strong collaborations with Indigenous communities in the preservation process.
"There's only about 8 km left of unprotected and undeveloped shoreline on the northern part of the peninsula, and these habitats are so important for many species..."
"He asked that we named the property Aah Mahwi Nibi or Crying Water to honour that history..."
