The Canadian Game Awards will take place in Toronto, shining a light on the vital role of Canadians in video game development. According to creator Carl-Edwin Michel, the gaming industry lacks equivalent recognition present in film and music sectors. This year’s event includes streaming from the Toronto International Film Festival’s Lightbox and features a range of awards for both major and independent games. Following a troubled previous event, organizers have taken time to rebuild trust and enhance the awards' credibility within the community.
"There's nothing [similar] for the video game industry, which is crazy when you think about it," said Carl-Edwin Michel.
The show will stream live online at 8 p.m. from the Lightbox, the downtown home of the Toronto International Film Festival, hosted by Canadian presenter Naomi Kyle.
Michel says his team took 2024 off to improve their next show and, frankly, to rebuild trust in the local gaming communities that the CGAs were still viable.
The Canadian Video Games are set to celebrate Canadian-made games this weekend, just as a surge of patriotism and buy-Canadian sentiment is gaining.
