"An arbitrator reviewing wages for flight attendants at Air Canada has finalized rates at the airline, bringing an end to the labour dispute that saw travel disrupted for thousands of people last summer. The arbitrator maintained the rates agreed to in a tentative deal for flight attendants at Air Canada's main line but bumped up the increase in the first year for those at Rouge."
"Ottawa intervened in the strike less than 12 hours after it began, invoking Section 107 of the Canada Labour Code to force the airline and the union into binding arbitration. The Canada Industrial Relations Board ordered flight attendants to return to work a day later. That order was defied by union officials, leading the board to state that the strike was unlawful even as the union said it would press ahead."
An arbitrator finalized wage rates for Air Canada flight attendants, keeping tentative mainline terms and increasing the first-year raise for Rouge members. More than 10,000 flight attendants struck last August, disrupting thousands of passengers. Ottawa invoked Section 107 of the Canada Labour Code within 12 hours and the Canada Industrial Relations Board ordered a return to work, a directive that union officials initially defied. Company and union negotiations resumed and yielded a tentative agreement with many non-wage terms already settled, including pensions, retirement bridging, health benefits, prone rest and vacation. Flight attendants had overwhelmingly rejected the wage offer, triggering mediation and arbitration.
