In July, Canada experienced the loss of over 40,000 jobs, maintaining an unemployment rate of 6.9 percent. The hardest-hit sector was information, culture, and recreation, with approximately 29,000 jobs lost. Restaurant owner Cesar Mesen reported a drop in customer traffic and income, resulting in only hiring a fraction of the usual summer staff despite receiving up to 250 applications. Most applicants are young people seeking their first job, highlighting challenges faced by youth in the current job market.
Cesar Mesen, owner of The Pint Public House, indicated that despite receiving a high volume of resumes, he cannot afford to hire more staff due to economic conditions. He stated, "If we post for one position, we maybe get 90, 100 candidates." Mesen's pub typically hires around 40 to 50 people for the summer, but this season's hiring was a fraction of that. He mentioned, "I cannot just hire people because I feel bad for them right now, we don't have a need to hire." Job losses predominantly affected young individuals, particularly those aged 15 to 24.
Statistics Canada reported that Canada's economy lost over 40,000 jobs in July, leading to a stable but high unemployment rate of 6.9 percent. The information, culture, and recreation sectors were the hardest hit, losing about 29,000 jobs, significantly impacting the restaurant industry.
