The Floridian 41 was en route to Miami from Chicago and carrying over 200 travelers when it became disabled and lost head-end power at 10:30 a.m. Sunday.
Temperatures got to 120° in the cars, and paramedics notified Amtrak that the passengers were in dangerous conditions, resulting in the hospitalization of four.
Nassau County Fire Rescue treated 16 people at the tracks, confirming that of the four who were hospitalized—two children and two adults—all remained in stable condition.
Videos posted on social media showed a swarm of first responders stationed along the tracks where the train broke down, highlighting the emergency response.
