"If Prop. 36 passes, more Californians, including green-card holders and refugees, will be deported. The impacts will be pretty disastrous," said Grisel Ruiz.
"Under this new system, a simple drug possession charge with prior convictions could be considered an aggravated felony conviction in immigration court, triggering the most severe penalties possible," Ruiz explained.
"The immigration argument to me is just a red herring because DAs already have a proven track record of working to mitigate unreasonable immigration consequences," said Yolo County DA Jeff Reisig.
"Supporters of Prop. 36 have described as overblown concerns that the measure would inflict devastating consequences for minor offenses," highlighting a divide among opinions.
