Violent Super Bowl Sunday in SJ: 2 killed, 5 injured in separate shootings
""I started hearing, 'pop, pop, pop up,'" Juratovac said. "I heard around four or five shots. All of a sudden, I saw a lot of commotion happening outside.""
""These were altercations that preceded shootings, not necessarily an area that's indicative of being, dangerous or related to being shot or shot at," SJPD Sgt. Jorge Garibay said."
""You know, this does put a little stain on everything, but I was sheltered in place with a lot of other Seattle Seahawks fans," Juratovac said. "And they're saying, 'is this what San Jose is like'? And I was glad to be the first person raise my hand say, 'no, this is not what San Jose is like'.""
Two separate shootings occurred in downtown San Jose during Super Bowl weekend. Five people were injured just before 11 p.m. Sunday at Market and Santa Clara streets. About 20 hours earlier, a different shooting near Paseo de San Antonio left two people dead. San Jose Police Department reports a suspect is in custody in connection with the homicides and says both investigations are ongoing. Police described the incidents as altercations that preceded the shootings rather than indicators of inherently dangerous areas. Residents sheltered in place and some expressed concern about perceptions of city safety, while city leadership insisted San Jose remains safe for upcoming events.
