""There's a shooter inside the mall, can we come in please?""
""I have a small house, so they're running through the house, into the bedrooms and the bathroom to hide, and then the tub and wherever they could find a place," said Martin. "The floors were just lined through the hallway and in the living room, everywhere there was a space people wanted to take cover in case something was going to happen.""
""They came to our door, and it was really beautiful to see that. And emotional to see that because as a parent, that's your worst fear," said Irene."
Three people were shot on Black Friday at Valley Fair Mall in San Jose, prompting mass panic and lockdowns. Dozens fled to the front steps of Martin and Irene Garcia's home, where two frantic girls asked to come inside. The Garcias welcomed more than fifty strangers into their small house and provided shelter for about six hours. People hid in bedrooms, bathrooms and tubs; many remained until midnight. The Garcias ordered pizza, prayed together, and helped separated parents reunite with their children. The couple's hospitality offered practical aid and emotional comfort during the emergency.
