The 2025 Travel Vacationer survey indicates that over 75% of Americans intend to road trip this summer. Consumer Affairs has identified states with significant road rage issues, highlighting Louisiana as the worst for the second consecutive year, where about 60% of fatal crashes relate to aggressive driving. New Mexico ranks second, noting a troubling correlation between traffic incidents and gun violence. These states pose risks not just in terms of safety but also legal penalties, with careless driving leading to potential imprisonment.
Nearly 60 percent of the state's fatal crashes and traffic deaths were linked to aggressive or careless driving, the highest rates in the nation.
Louisiana has the highest overall rates of fatal crashes and deaths involving aggressive or careless driving per 100,000 people.
New Mexico took the No. 2 spot not least because of its comparatively high rate of traffic incidents involving gun violence, almost four times the national rate.
This careless driving can also come with serious consequences including up to 90 days in jail for first-time offenders charged with 'reckless driving'.
