On Wednesday, the Department of Water Resources breached a levee to officially open their Lookout Slough project, which they hope will provide years of flood relief and sea level rise mitigation to the surrounding areas.
Karla Nemeth, DWR Director, emphasized that protecting people from flooding doesn't have to be at odds with the environment, and that the solutions become essential due to more intense droughts and floods.
Gov. Gavin Newsom said the Lookout Slough project is critical for both regional and statewide needs, demonstrating how strong partnerships can help meet Californians' needs while also protecting natural heritage.
Newsom highlighted that the project aligns with California's climate change mitigation goals, showcasing innovative solutions that work with nature to safeguard communities and local economies.
