Rental security deposits in California are now limited to one month's rent under new law AB 12, cutting move-in costs by half for furnished rentals and a third less for unfurnished units.
The new law limits security deposits to one month's rent for landlords with more than two properties or four units, or two months' rent for smaller landlords, except for military service member tenants.
California joins 11 other states in limiting security deposits to one month's rent, aiming to address housing affordability issues amid skyrocketing rents that have outpaced the increase in consumer goods costs since 1977.
