Portugal is currently battling extensive forest fires, supported by European partners, which have ignited a complex and dangerous situation, especially affected by high temperatures and winds.
Authorities reported that two individuals have died due to the fires, one a forestry agency worker, and the other a volunteer firefighter who suffered a heart attack.
Although 2024 has seen fewer wildfires than previous years—with 10,300 hectares burned by the end of August—the recent fires’ intensity highlights ongoing risks due to climate change.
National civil protection commander Andre Fernandes stated that while the wildfire situation is complex and difficult, it is not entirely out of control.
