The fast-moving wildfires engulfed thousands of acres rapidly, forcing tens of thousands of residents to evacuate, some abandoning vehicles to escape on foot.
Research indicates that between 2001 and 2020, the average peak daily growth rate of fires in the U.S. West has more than doubled, with California seeing a 398 percent increase.
Jennifer Balch emphasized that climate warming makes conditions ripe for wildfires, noting, 'we're making it very easy for fire to spread when we warm the climate.'
Balch pointed out the alarming trend of faster wildfires, stating these changes are unsettling because such fires tend to be the most destructive.
