Erika Barros, one of the farmworkers now known as the "Yolo Six," expressed concern for workplace safety saying, "The lack of shade, the lack of water, it was just something he wasn't doing right. One way or another, he's going to have to comply with the law." She highlighted the lack of knowledge regarding her rights as a worker to rest in the shade during extreme heat, an issue that needs urgent attention as temperatures rise.
The Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA) has begun to take a stand against unsafe working conditions by issuing nearly $17,600 in penalties against Ruiz Farm Labor for serious safety violations regarding heat protection training. This action aims to improve working environments susceptible to heat-related hazards, especially as California faces increasing heatwaves.
