'Not an everyday thing': Big rig truck driver arrested on Highway 101
"A speeding stop turned into an arrest on suspicion of DUI for the driver of a commercial semitrailer truck earlier this week after the California Highway Patrol pulled over a big rig on the Central Coast. According to the CHP, the driver was caught traveling 82 mph headed south on Highway 101 near Avila Beach, and when an officer made contact, the driver allegedly displayed signs of intoxication."
""The Commercial Driver refused a chemical test and a Judge had to issue a warrant for a mandatory required chemical test," the agency wrote in a social media post, adding that the driver was then arrested on suspicious of driving under the influence. The CHP added that the vehicle could have weighed up to 80,000 pounds. Officer Trevor Ashby with the CHP's San Luis Obispo office told SFGATE on Friday that it's uncommon to see commercial truck drivers arrested on suspicion of DUI."
"The speed limit for all semitrailer trucks that are towing a trailer on a highway in California is 55 mph, but the driver may have been found speeding over twice the legal limit. Officer Ashby said the limit on the Cuesta Grade section of Highway 101 near San Luis Obispo is 35 mph. "I don't know for sure if he was originally seen on the grade at the lower speed limit," he said."

The driver refused a chemical test, prompting a judge to issue a warrant for a mandatory chemical test and resulting in an arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence. The vehicle could have weighed up to 80,000 pounds. CHP Officer Trevor Ashby said commercial DUI arrests are uncommon but have occurred. California sets a 55 mph limit for semitrailers (35 mph on the Cuesta Grade) and a .04% BAC limit for commercial drivers versus .08% for standard drivers.
