Newly released bodycam video shows what led up to police fatally shooting carjacking suspect in SJ
"Hussein allegedly stole a red Corvette from a dealership in Sacramento on Saturday, Jan. 17, and committed multiple armed robberies in Northern California and the Bay Area over the next few days. On Wednesday, license plate readers spotted that stolen red Corvette in San Jose, but officers were not able to find the driver."
"The police chopper followed the carjacker about 45 miles south to Hollister, where the man got into a shootout with San Benito Sheriff's deputies and Hollister police. The man stole another car in Hollister -- seen on cell phone video -- then drove back to San Jose as he fired at California Highway Patrol officers along the way."
"In the video, you can see Sgt. Silva almost hit the suspect as he got out of the stolen vehicle and came to a stop in the middle of the intersection. Sgt. Silva exits his patrol car, gun drawn, and is immediately met with gunfire. Police say he was shot in the hand and head, fracturing his skull."
A 30-year-old suspect, Muhammed Hussein, initiated a crime spree by stealing a red Corvette from Sacramento on January 17, then committed multiple armed robberies across Northern California and the Bay Area. License plate readers identified the stolen vehicle in San Jose on Wednesday. The pursuit escalated when Hussein carjacked a bright green Corvette at gunpoint from a San Jose dealership. Police helicopters tracked him approximately 45 miles south to Hollister, where he engaged in shootouts with local law enforcement. Hussein stole another vehicle and returned to San Jose, firing at California Highway Patrol officers during the drive. The chase concluded in downtown San Jose when the suspect exited his stolen vehicle. Sergeant Silva confronted the armed suspect, who opened fire, striking the officer in the hand and head, fracturing his skull. The suspect was subsequently shot by police.
