L.A. County officials are addressing the chaotic evacuation of Altadena during recent wildfires by proposing a database to track residents with disabilities. Fire Chief Anthony Marrone highlighted the challenges of evacuating vulnerable populations during emergencies. The need for such a system became evident after the tragic deaths of several elderly and disabled residents. As the region faces increasing wildfire risks, concerns grow regarding its preparedness for an aging population. Supervisor Holly Mitchell emphasized the importance of readiness for future evacuations of residents wanting to remain in their homes.
"Trying to do it during an emergency is very, very difficult," he said.
"People must protect themselves."
"We look at the aging of our society - people wanting to age in their own homes, as a community, we are not prepared."
