Man charged with murder in shooting of Beam
"He really is the best of Oakland -- was the best of Oakland,"
"His spirit is still here."
"That's unacceptable that we have children in our community who now this is the norm. Two days in"
Cedric Irving, 27, was charged with murder after John Beam, 66, was shot in the head on the Laney College campus where Beam worked. The charging complaint alleges Irving personally fired a gun that caused great bodily injury and that the victim was particularly vulnerable, possibly due to age. Irving faces up to 50 years to life if convicted and is being held without bail pending arraignment. Beam was a celebrated former football coach and athletic director who led the Laney Eagles and appeared on the Netflix docuseries Last Chance U. Back-to-back shootings in Oakland last week prompted lockdowns and renewed calls for accountability over easy access to firearms.
