""The mountain was where Cole felt most alive. It was his place of purpose, his community, and his second home. Serving on ski patrol wasn't just a role for him - it was a calling.""
""Two Patrollers were caught in the slide and were immediately transported to Mammoth Hospital," Mammoth's initial statement said. "One patroller sustained serious injuries and is being transported out of the area for further care, the second patroller is being evaluated with possible broken bones.""
Cole Murphy, 30, a Mammoth Mountain ski patroller, died from injuries sustained during avalanche mitigation patrol on Friday morning. The avalanche occurred on Lincoln Mountain and caught two patrollers, both of whom were transported to Mammoth Hospital. One patroller sustained serious injuries and was moved out of the area for further care; the second was evaluated with possible broken bones. Mammoth Mountain announced the death via social media and included a family message describing his passion for the mountains and ski patrol as a calling. The resort remained closed Friday and Saturday, reopening Sunday. This is the second fatality among patrollers during mitigation work this year.
