The Monterey Bay Whale Watch group described the sighting as an "incredible and unexpected sighting," noting that they initially encountered humpback whales before the blue whales made an appearance.
The group stated the blue whales topped off an already amazing excursion which featured humpback whales feeding, highlighting the rarity of seeing blue whales in the area at this time of year.
Blue whales, the largest animals on Earth, primarily feed on krill and utilize baleen plates to filter large volumes of water from which they capture their prey.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, blue whales can grow up to 110 feet long and weigh as much as 330,000 pounds, with lifespans of 80 to 90 years.
