Kaiser Permanente lays off nurses in two Bay Area hospitals
Briefly

Kaiser Permanente has notified 42 outpatient clinic nurses in San Rafael and Petaluma that their positions are being eliminated due to a shift in care needs post-pandemic. The organization stated that it plans to redeploy affected nurses to one of 400 open nursing positions or provide outplacement services if they choose not to stay. However, nurses have expressed concern, claiming patient care is already strained, with significant wait times for appointments, and believe that layoffs will worsen the situation.
Kaiser Permanente managers informed 42 outpatient clinic nurses that their positions are being eliminated in order to rebalance resources due to shifts in care post-pandemic.
Kaiser stated it will attempt to redeploy affected nurses to one of the 400 available positions but will also offer career support if they cannot secure a new role.
Nurses at Kaiser disagree with the decision to lay off staff, citing existing patient wait times of over a month and fears that layoffs will worsen emergency room congestion.
Pamela Cronin, a pediatric nurse, described the layoffs as unexpected, stating that the last occurrence of such cuts was 30 years ago.
