""I felt like I finally did get validation. It's been six and a half years. I felt a lot of the time, 'Was I going crazy? Was this my fault?' And to hear each person go up and confirm everything I felt, it was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.""
""I wanted to work in a prison because I have a passion for 'underserved populations, populations that no one wants to work with.'""
A jury awarded $16.8 million to Dr. Beth Fischgrund after finding that her employer failed to respond to a threat from an incarcerated person, terminated her employment when she raised safety concerns, and allowed defamatory rumors to spread among staff. The dispute arose while Fischgrund worked as a contract psychologist at Salinas Valley State Prison beginning in September 2017 and involved a high-security unit housing people considered unsafe for the general population and some with severe mental illnesses. The verdict concludes a six-year effort to contest her dismissal. The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation declined to comment and did not say whether it will appeal.
