Investigators declare San Rafael apartment fire site a crime scene: 'Dangerous and hazardous'
Briefly

A fast-moving fire consumed a 19-unit apartment complex in San Rafael's Canal District within minutes, forcing residents to jump from windows and balconies. One body was found and two people remain missing while dozens of residents were displaced and placed into temporary housing. Crews found several locations of the structure unstable and declared the scene hazardous, preventing investigators from fully entering. Efforts are underway to shore up the building so a thorough investigation can proceed. The fire has been labeled suspicious to preserve the scene and determine cause and origin. The Marin County Coroner will identify the deceased.
Yesterday evening's work inside of the complex became hazardous, as a few of the locations were identified as unstable. Today, more resources have arrived," said Sergeant Justin Graham with the San Rafael Police Department.
I had an opportunity today to actually go into the complex, and I can tell you that the devastation is extensive. It is extremely dangerous and hazardous. What workers are having to deal with is just astonishing," Graham said.
We don't know cause or origin. So, we want to be able to know what that is. Part of calling this a suspicious fire allows us to do what you see behind us. Where we use the resources to conduct a very thorough investigation and keep the integrity of the scene maintained," Graham said.
