Injured hiker hoisted from California canyon during hourslong rescue, crews say
Briefly

A hiker was injured on a trail above Deep Creek Hot Springs, prompting a complex rescue operation by San Bernardino County and Apple Valley fire crews. Unable to use a helicopter due to rain, rescuers advanced by all-terrain vehicle before hiking over a mile into the canyon. After treating the hiker's injuries, improving weather allowed a helicopter to hoist the hiker to safety. The entire rescue lasted approximately five hours, concluding with all rescue personnel safely returning from the darkened canyon.
"With the rainfall, a helicopter was not a viable option to rescue the hiker. Instead, crews went as far as they could with the all-terrain vehicle, and then had to hike down into the canyon."
"After locating and treating the injured hiker, skies cleared just enough for a sheriff's aviation helicopter to come in. The helicopter crew hoisted the hiker from the canyon to an awaiting ambulance."
