Here's what to do (and not do) if a rattlesnake bites you on a California hike
Briefly

If you can't get to the hospital right away, lay or sit down with the bite below the level of your heart. Then wash the wound with warm, soapy water and cover it with clean, dry material.
Do not pick up the snake or try to trap it. Do not apply a tourniquet, slash the wound, suck out the venom, apply ice or soak the wound in water, drink alcohol, or drink caffeine.
Rattlesnakes can be recognized by the distinct sound of their rattles. They may also be identified by their appearance - gray or light brown exteriors, triangular-shaped heads, ranging from 2-4 feet in length, and ability to camouflage.
