Dozens of farmworkers interviewed say that they often toil in blistering heat without shade and sometimes without water provided by employers, as required by state law.
Cortese criticized Newsom for not realizing that farmworkers are endangered because many employers are violating California law, calling the decision to veto the bill an affront.
In a veto message to state lawmakers, Newsom said that 'farmworkers need strong protections from the risk of heat-related illness,' yet claimed the system isn't equipped for such determinations.
The bill was sponsored by the United Farm Workers union, which established California's landmark outdoor heat-illness safety law after several workers died in searing temperatures.
