"Heat islands" worsening extreme temperatures across the U.S.
Briefly

Nearly 34 million people live in environments where UHIs can boost temperatures by at least 8°F. Cities like New York, Chicago, and San Francisco have significant UHI effects, amplifying temperatures by over 10°F in some areas.
UHIs are driven by factors like built environments, reduced green spaces, and dense populations, worsening heat intensity in urban areas. The top UHI-affected US cities include New York, San Francisco, Chicago, and others.
"Urban heat islands expose residents to disproportionate heat risks and cooling costs. Carbon pollution exacerbates these effects, increasing global temperatures and heat-related challenges," said Climate Central's Jennifer Brady.
