"Sheriff's deputies Sevak Grigoryan and Christopher Matkin were first on the scene. Sheriff's office body cam footage showed them immediately stripping off their heavy gear and heading straight into the ocean; they swam about 75 feet offshore and found the couple struggling to stay afloat as the paragliding equipment sank them into the water. "It was a tense situation because both of the victims were pulling down on everyone and dragging us under," Matkin told KABC. "But we were able to calm them down.""
"The ordeal began midday Friday, when a man and woman on vacation went paragliding near Carbon Beach in Malibu. Also known as Billionaires' Beach for its many rich and famous coastal residents, the area was badly damaged earlier this year in the LA wildfires. Although the couple's excursion started out on the sunny shoreline, they quickly found themselves in a thick bank of fog. They became disoriented,"
Two vacationing paragliders near Carbon Beach in Malibu became disoriented in a thick bank of fog, fell into the Pacific Ocean, and screamed for help. Bystanders on the shore called 911. Sheriff’s deputies Sevak Grigoryan and Christopher Matkin arrived first, removed their heavy gear, and swam about 75 feet offshore. Body camera footage showed the deputies cutting the couple free from sinking paragliding equipment with knives while calming them, despite the victims pulling and risking dragging rescuers under. The deputies helped the pair ashore, where paramedics assessed them and found no need for hospitalization. Sheriff Robert Luna praised the deputies for the daring rescue.
