A pedestrian was killed on Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu on Monday night, authorities said. The person was struck by a vehicle near Winding Way about 7:30 p.m., Lt. Aaron Jacob of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said. The driver was cooperative and stayed at the scene, Jacob said. Investigators do not suspect drugs, alcohol or speeding played a role in the collision, he said. The incident is still under investigation.
For travelers looking to get to know the many-varied charms of the Golden State, discovering it through the best beaches in California is never a bad idea. The state's coastline spans a vast 3,427 miles after all. Among its 420 public beautiful beaches are plentiful opportunities to swim, lay out, look at tide pools, surf to your heart's content, or watch the sunset.
Sheriff's deputies Sevak Grigoryan and Christopher Matkin were first on the scene. Sheriff's office body cam footage showed them immediately stripping off their heavy gear and heading straight into the ocean; they swam about 75 feet offshore and found the couple struggling to stay afloat as the paragliding equipment sank them into the water. "It was a tense situation because both of the victims were pulling down on everyone and dragging us under," Matkin told KABC. "But we were able to calm them down."
On Monday morning, a homeless man sat in front of the county courthouse in Malibu, where he sleeps each night. In front of him was a small, green propane tank affixed with a torch, which he said he uses to cook and form wood pipes for tobacco and cannabis. A short walk away is Legacy Park, an oasis of coastal prairies, bluffs and native woodlands.
