Grass fires break out along Highway 1 in Santa Cruz's South County

Firefighters battled several small vegetation fires Monday afternoon, containing the blazes to about 2 acres near the Highway 1 exit. Cal Fire CZU reported no further progress around 2 p.m.
A large gray-black plume of smoke was visible after grass and brush caught fire. Evacuations were ordered for one residence, with warnings issued for a nearby area.
At least two structures faced initial threat from the fires; a detached garage was lost, alongside damages to a residential deck and fencing.
Helicopters, air tankers, and multiple ground units were deployed to aid in firefighting efforts. The cause of the fires is currently under investigation.
