"The thing that continues to replay the most in my heart and mind and soul (is) how utterly defenseless she was, how small and light ... and how Ryan was a strong, stocky male, 35 years old. With only one punch, he could have sent her flying across a room,"
"He brutally and sadistically beat her continually, throughout her entire body, and for an unfathomable amount of time. He tortured her to death."
Cynthia Mykkanen, a 57-year-old beloved elementary school teacher, was fatally beaten by her son, Ryan Garner, in July 2019. Police say Mykkanen's head was repeatedly slammed into a wall and that Garner later dropped her gravely injured at an emergency room, offered a false alibi about a nonexistent boyfriend, and drove off in her pickup truck. Garner, 41, had a prior conviction for assaulting his diminutive mother. A jury convicted Garner of first-degree murder in September after less than an hour of deliberation. Formal sentencing was postponed to Jan. 12 after Garner refused transport to court.
