A woman was on her cell phone in her bedroom when a man entered the apartment through an open window and ordered her to hang up the phone before he "smacked the phone out of her hands and threatened her." The man demanded to know where money and other valuables were; when he fled, he stole the woman's car, which was later recovered in Oakland."
Albert Decoto, 46, of Oakland, was arrested Oct. 9 and is held without bail on 14 criminal counts including multiple first-degree residential burglaries and robberies, carjacking, vehicle theft, assault on a peace officer, attempted carjacking, resisting an officer, and possession of a controlled substance. Investigators link the charges to a six-week crime spree in Berkeley and Castro Valley that primarily targeted women. Reported incidents include an Aug. 21 Castro Valley burglary of jewelry, a Sept. 17 home invasion and car theft on College Avenue in Berkeley, and a Sept. 19 burglary on Stanton Street. A woman detained with Decoto was released without charges and authorities are investigating similar crimes in other East Bay cities. Decoto was scheduled to enter a plea Friday morning.
