Employees at Monterey Bay Whale Watch reported witnessing an incredible sight: around 25 octopuses surfaced near shops, a sight they had never experienced in 20 years.
The whale watching company believes the octopuses flocked to the surface due to oxygen depletion caused by millions of anchovies in the water.
Octopuses, being invertebrates with three hearts and 90% muscle, adapt well to their environment, which includes fleeing predators like gulls and otters.
The sighting in Monterey harbor was described as quite a spectacle for onlookers, with some octopuses escaping by releasing ink or diving swiftly.
